Identità’s mission
is to execute the functions and duties of the Public Administration in matters relating to passports, visa, identity documents, work & residence documents & the registration of public deeds & acts of civil status.
Identità was established in 2013 by virtue of Legal Notice 269 of 2013 and is responsible for citizens’ identity management and the implementation of migration processes.
The Agency offers a specialised public service in matters relating to the notifications of acts of civil status, the registration of public deeds and the issue of e-ID cards, e-passports, visas, and residence permits.

Identity Cards Unit
The responsibilities of the Identity Cards Unit (ICU) fall under the Identity Card and other Identity Documents Act (Chapter 258 of the Laws of Malta), which states that every Maltese national over the age of fourteen years shall be in possession of a valid identity card.
Passport Office
The Passport Office issues Maltese passports to Maltese citizens and provides assistance to Maltese embassies, High Commissions, and Consulates around the world.
Public Registry
The responsibilities of the Public Registry originate from the Public Registry Act (Cap. 56), the Marriage Act (Cap. 255), the Civil Unions Act (Cap. 530), and the Civil Code (Cap. 16) (Articles 1 to 306).
Searches Unit
The Searches Unit is a Public Entity that issues search orders related to the Transfer of Immovable Property by individuals or firms.
Central Visa Unit
The Central Visa Unit (CVU) is the government’s immigration central authority responsible for the implementation of national visa policies and the provisions under the Schengen acquis (as far as visa matters are concerned).
Expatriates Unit
